Northampton Winter Festival Open Meet 2017

16th-17th November 2017

The Royal School Elite swim team headed to Rugby last weekend for our third short course meet. This is the end of the first cycle for this season and now we move from short course to Long course.

The swimmers all start the season with process goals which they are trying improve over the first cycle and this meet should be the culmination of that work.

We pitted ourselves against some good clubs particularly in the younger age groups, with Ellesmere, Northampton and Nova Centurion all with squads in attendance.

Swimmers from the ND squad who had outstanding swims were Harry Negrine 200 fly, knocking 31 seconds off his best time. Theo Clark producing a fabulous last turn and last 25m on his 100m fly, Bethany Smith turning in an epic last 50m in her 200 fc. Morgan Lerpiniere knocking a huge chunk off her 400 IM, Pheobe Johnson producing an excellent 200 fly and Emily Tite showing lots of improved skills in her 200 IM. There was an exciting race between Chloe Harris, Bethany and Eve Williams in the 100m fc. In lanes next to each other, they had a nail biting finish with Chloe coming out on top by 5/100ths of a second with Beth and Eve recording exactly the same time, but all smashing there best times by over 2 seconds.

The Elite swimmers all swam fast. Lewis Hodgetts producing an excellent underwater phase on the lung busting last turn of a 200 fly to win and record a best time. As did Keeley Murcott in her 200 fly. Thomas Watkin and Katie Leary both had several good swims. Ben Cope had an outstanding 200 IM to get a huge best time. George Barber and Katie Hawkins both produced some excellent swims.

Overall, the skills worked on by the swimmers in the first three months of the season shone through. Lots of races won with outstanding last turns and finishes, head and shoulders above the competition.

This sets us up nicely for our next meet at the start of what promises to be an exciting 2018, in Bristol.

RWS wish you Happy Christmas and a fantastic new year!
