RWS Swim Team British Championships success!

Eighteen RWS swimmers ventured up to Sheffield recently to compete in the 2023 British Swimming Championships. The swimmers get the privilege to compete during a qualifying window in March to May. The fastest 24 swimmers in each event go head to head.

RWS had some stunning success right across the week and in a wide range of events.

Day 1

Finn Drysdale and Sophie Busby competed in the 1500m recording best times by 3 & 5 seconds respectively. Finn finishing 7th, Sophie finishing 9th.

Day 2 Highlights

David Annis started an amazing week gaining silver in a new best time & Finn Drysdale also made the final finishing in 10th place, both in the 200 freestyle.

Lillie Grover made the first of many finals finishing 7th in the 400 freestyle. Sophie Busby also produced her fastest ever swim in the same event.

David Annis won another silver, breaking his own club record in the 50m backstroke.

Louise Jones came 8th in the 50m breaststroke final improving on her heat swim.

Day 3 Highlights

Two medals were won in the 200m butterfly. David Annis winning his first National title and James Shevchenko gaining a superb bronze.

Lillie Grover came 6th in the 100m backstroke.

David Annis continued his medal surge with a bronze in the 100m backstroke.

Day 4 Highlights

David Annis produced his swim of the week winning and gaining his second gold in the 400 medley in a titanic battle. This was another club record by quite a distance. James Shevchenko narrowly missed a medal with a fantastic swim in the same event finishing 4th.

Lillie Grover came a creditable 7th in the 50 m freestyle.

Day 5 Highlights

The finals on day 5 started with a sensational gold in the 200m freestyle for Lillie Grover, executing the race plan to perfection and gaining her first national title.

Lewis Hickman produced an amazing last 50m to narrowly miss a medal in the 200m breaststroke finishing 5th, but broke the club record.

Harry Chandler produced an epic final swim to gain his first National medal with a bronze in the 100m butterfly. James Shevchenko finished 10th in the same event.

Lillie Grover continued her fantastic week finishing 5th in the 50m butterfly.


Day 6 Highlights

David Annis won his third gold of the week in another exciting 200 medley race, with a new club record. He followed this with a fantastic silver finishing strongly in the 200 backstroke. James Shevchenko finished 9th in his final with a strong final swim and best time.

Lillie Grover came as close as is possible without winning a medal in her 50m backstroke. She came joint 4th, 0.01 seconds behind joint second.

Day 7 Highlights

The final day produced more great swims for David Annis with him narrowly missing another gold in an epic battle in the 400 freestyle finishing with a silver. Harry Chandler finished 10th in his final after a superb heat swim.

David then gained another silver in the 200 backstroke with a strong finish.

Two club records were broken in the medley relays for both the boys and girls. The girls doing a fantastic finals swim finishing 7th against a lot of University teams.  Teams were as follows;

Boys – David Annis, Andy Jones, James Shevchenko, Oliver Burns

Girls – Lily May Marston, Louise Jones, Chloe Harris, Aimee Monks.

All in all a fantastic week of racing by the whole team, I am so proud of how we came together and produced the club’s best ever individual medal haul.
