Welsh Sunshine Anyone?

Welsh Sunshine Anyone?

Normally at this time of year our trip to Cardiff means hot temperatures and plenty of sunshine. Now, either we have been lucky over the past couple of years or the weather over the weekend was a one off, either way the RWS band wagon was in town ready to take on the best that Wales (and it seemed the Midlands) had to offer, as RWS swimmers began their final preparations for Nationals.

At this time of year Cardiff it is usually the last chance for youth swimmers to qualify for Nationals, but this year the age group swimmers also had one more opportunity to book their place at this summer's National Championships to be held at Sheffield. So with that in mind Courteney Price, Lillyella Craw-Seaman, Megan Carline, Mitchell Page and Casey Barrett all made the trip to give it one last shot.

Both Courteney and Lillyella had the 200m Backstroke and offered themselves the opportunities in both the heat and final, but after heroic performances both girls fell short of the mark by the smallest of margins. Sadly this was to be the case for most of the age group swimmers, as Casey too had chances in the 400m and 1500m Freestyle events, but like the girls he fell short of the standard required for a National Qualifying Time.

There were also finals for Mitchell in the 200m backstroke and also a Gold medal in the 1500m Freestyle.  Megan who has also showed a welcome return to form winning Gold in the 400m Individual Medley and especially the 200m Butterfly which having swam 10 seconds off her PB in the heat dug deep and reproduced the form that saw her finish 5th in the national final last year with a season best time of 2:29.99 another National Qualifying Time and also collected her 2nd Silver medal for the weekend.

For the youth swimmers this meet was also their last chance to home their race performances and identify any areas of improvement ready for Nationals and with the heats in the morning and finals at night this was the perfect place to do it.

Kieran Smith and James Robinson led the boys by making 10 finals and between them taking home 9 medals. For the youth girls it was Poppy Hill and Sophie Long who were charged with leading the girls. Both qualified for finals and added to the ever increasing medals tally for RWS, but it was Alice Dearing and Isobel Page who brought home the Gold medals for the youth girls.

Alice continued her imperious form on what is fast becoming an event that she is untouchable in. From the start she declared her intentions with an opening 100m of 1:03. Which was faster than her individual 100m Freestyle time by 2 seconds and from there she never looked back with the other girls in her wake she finished in a time just a shade over 9 minutes.

Isobel, having had a difficult weekend and struggling for form produced one of the shock results of the weekend by winning the 100m Backstroke event. She went in like all good racers should do, she threw caution to the wind and went for it and not only did she win the race, but clocked up a new life time best as well. Great Job.

Over the weekend the RWS team of 12 amassed 19 medals and came 3rd in the overall club competition.

Head coach Nathan Hilton was pleased with the results and pleased with the fact we came 3rd with less than half the number of swimmers from other clubs competing. However it was more about getting in one last meet to prepare for nationals in 3 weeks time that was the important thing.

As Nathan rightly said preparation for nationals is key, and with only three weeks left the message upon the return to the pool was:

Time for one last big effort, switched on ready for the seasons climax event.
